As a restaurant serving a fusion of West African and West Indian food, our cuisine derives a lot of inspiration and influence from Jamaica. And we wouldn’t have it any other way! In fact, we’re so proud of our Jamaican roots that we’re dedicating this blogpost to the mighty Jamrock. Enjoy!

Interesting Facts

Jamaica is the third largest island of the Caribbean and has a population size of more than 2.8million.

It’s motto is “Out of Many, One People” and is an ode to its multiracial roots.

The name ‘Jamaica’ is of Taino origin and means ‘Land of Wood and Water.’ 🌴

Famous Traditions

Jamaicans looove Christmas. Expect loads of Black Cake and Sorrel, traditional Junkanoo festivals and large family gatherings!

A Dutch Pot is a staple in pretty much every Jamaican home – in fact, Jamaicans traditionally gift these to newlyweds, too! Good food = good marriage and all that!

National Hero

Nanny of the Maroons is regarded by many as the Matriarch of Jamaica. After being sold into slavery as a child in Ghana and shipped to Jamaica, she eventually escaped and began leading the Leeward Maroons along with her brother. As Maroon leader she helped free and resettle almost 1000 slaves and was a thorn in the side of the British military. She is commemorated on the Jamaican $500 bill

Popular Dishes

Jerk Chicken: chicken pieces seasoned and marinated with Jerk spice. Whilst this Jamaican classic is tasty however prepared, you’ve got to have this charbroiled to experience it at its most authentic! It’s also the perfect pair to the next dish…

Oh, and Curry Goat, Patties, Plantains, Oxtail and Vegan Ital Stew all deserve honourable mentions (and are also served in our restaurant!)

After the best places to find African food in Abu Dhabi? We’ve got you. Nowhere served the kind of food we grew up on when our restaurant journey started, so we are genuinely gassed about its growing presence within AD. Still, we’re often asked about other African/Caribbean spots besides us so we’ve put together some recommendations to help you get started. You’re welcome.

1. West to West Kitchen

We had to big up ourselves, right? Our Sierra-Leonean-Trinidadian-Jamaican fusion saw us recognised as WhatsOn Abu Dhabi’s ‘2021 Indie Restaurant of the Year‘ and has now gotten us shortlisted for TimeOut’s ‘Best Budget’ category. It would be our honour to show you why!

They say that if you want an authentic food experience, eat with the locals. Well, African Dishes keeps its loyal Nigerian contingent very happy. They serve up a good ambience, too, so head over if you fancy chopping along to the sound of AfroBeats.

When our journey started, there were no jamaican restaurants in Abu Dhabi offering the cuisine our family grew up on: Sierra Leonean, Trinidadian and Jamaican comfort food. At the time, we didn’t know whether this was because there was no demand for this type of food in the capital or whether no one had decided to go with the idea yet. With one (… or two) fingers crossed and a lot of prayer, we decided the reason was the latter and, in 2018, we opened our first pop-up stall in Yas Mall. Flash forward just four years and the number of West African and Caribbean restaurants in the capital is increasing.

The Latest Jamaican Restaurant

At the time of writing, the latest Jamaican restaurant will be opening in Yas Bay in the next few months. With this trend, we are often asked the question by our guests: ‘aren’t you worried that with more West African/Caribbean/Jamaican restaurants, you’ll have more competitors?’

Divisiveness

Historically, one thing our community has been made weaker by, in our opinion, is divisiveness. In many major cities there will be a bustling and thriving Chinatown: a conglomeration of outlets with a focus on Chinese products. The foundation of these economic and social hubs are restaurants … many Chinese restaurants successfully operating side-by-side. There is obviously competition but because there are a lot of Chinese restaurants together, this helps to raise the profile of Chinese food and culture and, consequently, attracts more people than a solitary Chinese restaurant would do by itself … “a rising tide lifts all the boats” and all that.

A real-life example

We view the increase in the popularity of West African and Caribbean restaurants in Abu Dhabi in exactly the same way. In fact, we experienced a real-life example of this a few months ago. A guest dined in. When asked where she found out about us, she said she had tried food at another Jamaican restaurant in Abu Dhabi and she had enjoyed what she ate. She then googled Jamaican restaurants in Abu Dhabi, discovered us and was pleasantly surprised to find out we also offer, cuisine she had never tried before, Trinidadian and Sierra Leonean food.

Are we worried?

So are we worried about a new Jamaican restaurant opening? Our response, in a word, is always, ‘no!’ Yes there will be more restaurants offering similar cuisine to us, but we’re not worried. This is something we embrace and this promising trend makes us think that our decision to open at a time when there were very few restaurants like us was actually the right choice.

I grew up in the UK. Historically, Black Britons were categorised in to two, fairly broad, groups: Black Africans and Black Caribbeans. Ethnically, we Black Brits are a minority in the UK yet, when I was growing up, amongst certain groups, there were playground rivalries between Black Africans (mainly people of West African descent) and Black Caribbeans (mainly people of Jamaican descent): which group is best at running? Which group is best at maths? And, of course, which group does the best food? Jollof Rice or Rice&Peas? Festivals or Chin-Chin? Chicken Stew or Jerk Chicken? Now, for the running and maths question, I’m just not brave enough to embark on that answer (the fence I’m sitting on is rather comfortable, thank you). However, being a Black Brit whose mum is from Africa and dad is from the Caribbean, I feel a little more qualified to answer the food question and my answer is … they’re both BANGIN!!!!!!

“Where can I get plantains from in Abu Dhabi?” is a question we often get asked at the shop. It’s a straightforward question, we’re straightforward people so here’s is a straightforward answer … with a few caveats.

At WtoW, we provide fried plantain as a firm favourite on our menu.

But if you want to cook them yourself, here are a list of outlets that sell raw plantains (also, check out our “How to Fry Plantains” video):

Mina Port – although, you may have to buy in bulk because they tend to sell wholesale

Lulu and Carrefour – we’ve found plantains are stocked in most of the large hypermarket Lulus and in the Yas Mall Carrefour

Small community grocery shops – in the UK these would be called ‘corner shops’ and in the US they’d be called ‘convenience stores’ (sorry, not too sure what the generic names are for these establishments in any other country). In Abu Dhabi, these shops tend to be found nestled amongst residential flats in the city.

Oh, and here in the desert, it doesn’t matter whether you call them “plan-tin” or “plan-tayn”; you use either of these terms and you’re guaranteed to be received by a thoroughly confused, vacant expression. Here, the vendors call them “Indian bananas” … and that puts to bed the age old debate about “plan-tin” or “plan-tayn.”

Let us know in the comments below if you’ve found plantains anywhere else in Abu Dhabi. Also, let us know how you prefer your plantain and what you eat it with. You never know, your preference could make it onto the WtoW menu.

So, there’s your answer, but, if you’re new to the culinary wonder that is plantain, please read on for a brief beginner’s guide:

What is plantain?

They’re a bit like a banana but they’re bigger, they’ve got thicker skins and we wouldn’t recommend eating them raw as a snack in your lunchbox (although, when fried, this would be perfect in your lunchbox).

How is it eaten?

It really depends what part of the world you’re in. Plantains are eaten across Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and India. Our background is West African (Sierra Leone) and the Caribbean (Trinidad&Tobago and Jamaica). Growing up, we would eat plantains either boiled or fried (when ever we’d have the choice, which growing up West African and Caribbean, wasn’t very frequently, we’d always prefer our plantains fried).

What do you eat it with?

We’re the worst people to ask this question. We LOVE plantains so, we’d say, fry them and eat them with EVERYTHING … except for tomato ketchup (… yep, someone once came into the shop and asked for ketchup to have with their plantains … KMT … SMH). However, traditionally, in Sierra Leone, Trinidad&Tobago and Jamaica, plantains are eaten as a side dish to accompany a variety of meals: Chicken stew and Jollof rice, Jerk chicken and rice and peas, curry goat and dhalpuri roti (all dishes, we hasten to add, that can be found on the WtoW menu).

How do you know when it’is ripe?

You may see plantains green, yellow or even brownie-black in colour. The hue just indicates how ripe the plantain is. The darker and softer it is, the sweeter it is. If you’re lucky, supermarkets that don’t know much about plantains may offer deals on bunches of plantains when they get to this stage as they think the plantain is off. Growing up, our mum and aunties used to fleece the poor supermarkets on a weekly basis, buying discount plantains and frying up super sweet dishes to accompany our Jollof rice and Jerk chicken all weekend! BANGIN!!

[image credit: Meseidy Rivera/The Noshery and thepioneerwoman.com]

Whilst it all depends on preference, plantains tend to be ripe when the skin colour is yellow with a few brownie-black patches on and it is firm to touch.

What is this “plan-tin”/“plan-tayn” debate all about?

West Africans and Caribbeans pronounce “plantain” in two different ways. Whilst it’s not a hard-and-fast rule, West Africans tend to say “plan-tayn” and Caribbeans tend to say “plan-tin.” Amongst the diaspora, where West Africans and Caribbeans converge, for example in the UK, the pronunciation debate rages on. You ask a Brit of West African or Caribbean descent how to pronounce “plantain” and battle lines may be drawn. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

We hope you now feel a little more knowledgeable about one of our favourite dishes. If you haven’t tried plantain yet, please do get involved the next time you visit us at WtoW or watch our “How to Fry Plantains” video and make them yourself.

Leave a comment below and let us know how you get on.

When our journey started, there were no restaurants in Abu Dhabi offering the cuisine our family grew up on: Sierra Leonean, Trinidadian and Jamaican comfort food. Whilst this promising trend helped us feel as though we made the right decision, what really solidified this was being awarded the 2021 Indie Restaurant of The Year by What’s On Abu Dhabi and participating in the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Formula One. Who would have thought that Sierra Leonean, Trinidadian and Jamaican comfort food could win awards out here in the desert and be a part of global sporting event? … Thanks What’s On Abu Dhabi and Formula One for making this all a reality.

You guys are going to have to sample them all and then let us know. What we can say is, at West to West Kitchen, our family recipes and menu represent the food we grew up on: Jamaican, Trinidadian and Sierra Leonean home-cooked dishes. We invite you to have it how we did when were growing up … traditional Jerk chicken with Jamaican rice and peas or throwing it together with Sierra Leonean Jollof rice and see what you think. And who is to say a side of Jerk wings doesn’t go down well with Trinidadian Doubles? Instead of ‘where is the best place to go for Jamaican Jerk chicken in Abu Dhabi?’, maybe the question should be, ‘where is the best place to go for a mix of Jamaican, Trinidadian and Sierra Leonean food in Abu Dhabi? Now the answer to THAT question we can probably help you out with.

Where do you think does the best Jerk chicken in the UAE? Let us know your thoughts in the comments. Don’t worry, we have thick skins, if your answer isn’t WtoW we won’t be hurt … well, not much.
